10TH District
July, 2011
Dear Residents of the 10th District,
Hello, my name is Derrick Smith and the purpose of this letter is to briefly introduce myself as your new Illinois State Representative of the 10th District.
I am a native of Chicago, graduating from St. Benedict High School in 1981. In 2005, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from DePaul University. Throughout my professional career I have been committed to bringing professionalism and a superior work-ethic to the public sector; holding various positions of increasing authority with the Department of Streets and Sanitation, the Cook County Forest Preserve District, the Office of the Medical Examiner, and the Highways Department. Most recently, I held the position of Deputy Director of Accounting Revenue for the Office of the Secretary of State – State of Illinois.
I was introduced to politics and public service at a young age by my father, the late Mr. Hayes Smith Sr. a former precinct captain of the old 42nd Ward (currently the 27th Ward) and his mentor and former grade school teacher, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.
My dedication to public service and community has also led me to devote time and effort to social service organizations that benefit children and adults alike in the community; organizations such as The Neighborhood United Organization, Soles for the Needy, Major Adams Community Committee, The Austin Coalition on Under-aged Drinking, and 100 Men Plus.
As your new State Representative of the 10th District, I know that in order to provide a high-quality and high level of service, I must understand the issues and concerns of the residents, businesses and community organizations within the District, and the community should understand my vision for the District. As a first step in my constituent familiarization process, I would like to host a meet and greet for us to begin to get to know each other. Again, my paramount concern is how I can better serve YOU.
Respectfully,
Derrick Smith
Illinois State Representative – 10th District
